Roughly one in ten people is left-handed and almost every knitting pattern, hook roll and tutorial assumes the other nine. We asked our left-handed customers what helps, and the answers were more specific and less mystical than the internet suggests.
The myth of the mirror
The received wisdom is that left-handed people should simply mirror the instructions. That works for some people and is actively unhelpful for others, because the difficulty is rarely the stitches — it is the tools, the diagrams and the muscle memory of watching someone else work.
A left-handed knitter can work any standard pattern, holding the yarn in whichever hand is comfortable. What trips people up is a chart with a directional increase, a video filmed from the other side, or a hook roll whose slots are angled the wrong way.
What actually helps
Circular needles over straights, because they remove the question of which hand holds which needle. Interchangeable sets with a short cable for the same reason. A hook roll where the slots are cut straight rather than raked, so the hook heads do not catch on the flap. Scissors with a symmetric handle. A row counter you can operate with either thumb.
The single most useful thing is a mirrored chart. Any chart can be flipped, and a designer who provides the pattern as a PDF will usually send you a mirrored version if you ask — we have never heard of anyone being refused.
How to ask
Email the designer with your specific question rather than a general one. "Could you send a mirrored version of the chart on page four?" gets a yes. "Do you have a left-handed version?" gets a confused no, because most designers have never been asked the first question.
And tell manufacturers. Our hook roll slots are currently angled for right-handed use, which we only understood after eleven left-handed customers wrote and told us. A mirrored version is on our list for next year, and it exists as a product because people took the trouble to complain precisely.
Getting better, slowly
The craft is more accommodating than it looks and less accommodating than it should be. Most fixes are small — an extra pattern version, a different slot angle, a photograph taken from the other side — and they happen when enough people ask for the same one.
