Gifts for makers, by budget

What to buy a knitter who already owns everything, at three price points — and the three gifts that quietly disappoint.

Buying for a maker is harder than buying for anyone else, because they have opinions and they already own the obvious things. Here is how to choose well at three budgets, and what to avoid.

Ask one question, not five

Do not ask what they want; they will say "nothing". Ask what they are knitting at the moment and where they keep it. The answer tells you the project type, the size of bag that fits it, and whether their current setup is a paper bag held together with hope.

By budget

Three tiers, each with a genuine recommendation rather than a price-point filler.

BudgetWhat to buyWhy it works
Under $25The Brass Stitch Marker Set or The Little Tool KeeperSmall, obviously useful, and impossible to already own too many of.
Under $50The Weekend Project Bag, or The Everyday Project ToteA bag is the one thing every maker replaces eventually, and the upgrade is felt immediately.
Over $50The Maker Starter Set, or the Mend & Care KitA complete setup in one box, which reads as a considered gift rather than a purchase.

What quietly disappoints

  • Yarn, unless you know the exact weight, fibre and dye lot they want. You do not.
  • Novelty notions — sheep-shaped tape measures, slogan mugs. They get used once.
  • Anything that implies the hobby should be tidier, cheaper or quieter than it is.
